GENEVA, Nov 21, 2006 (AFP) - Following is the latest statistical update from UNAIDS on the number of people living with HIV/AIDS across the world, as well as data on new infections and HIV-related deaths:
1) People living with HIV/AIDS in 2006
Worldwide:
39.5 million (ranging from 34.1 to 47.1 million), including 37.2 million adults aged between 15 and 49 (32.1 to 44.5 million) and 2.3 million children under 15 years old (1.7 to 3.5 million).
17.7 million of the infected adults are women (15.2 to 20.9 million)
By region (total includes adults and children):
Sub-Saharan Africa :24.7 million (range: from 21.8 to 27.7 million)
North Africa and Middle East: 460,000 (270,000 to 760,000)
Latin America: 1.7 million (1.3 million to 2.5 million)
Caribbean: 250,000 (190,000 to 320,000)
North America: 1.4 million (880,000 to 2.2 million)
West and Central Europe: 740,000 (580,000 to 970.000)
Eastern Europe and Central Asia: 1.7 million (1.2 to 2.6 million)
East Asia: 750,000 (460,000 to 1.2 million)
South and Southeast Asia: 7.8 million (5.2 to 12 million)
Oceania: 81,000 (50,000 to 170,000)
2) New HIV infections in 2006
Worldwide:
4.3 million (3.6 to 6.6 million), including 3.8 million adults (3.2 to 5.7 million) and 530,000 children (410,000 to 660,000).
