HongKong-AIDS: Mother abandons a one-year-old HIV-infected boy in HK hospital

HONG KONG, Dec 8 (AFP) - A mother has abandoned a one-year-old HIV-infected boy in a Hong Kong hospital and is believed to have left the territory, it was reported here Friday.

The mother, who was also Human immuno-deficiency Virus (HIV) positive, disappeared after her baby was diagnosed at the age of three months, the South China Morning Post said.

Louise Wong Wat-chu, project manager at the Society for Aids Care, was quoted by the Post as saying the mother did not appear to be distressed before she went missing.

The newspaper said 11 children in Hong Kong were recored as HIV-positive after catching the virus from their mothers during pregnancy, labour or breast-feeding.

HIV is the precursor to Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS).
