DAKAR, Dec 2 (AFP) - The Senegalese government has decided to make anti-retroviral drugs available at no cost to pregnant HIV-positive women to avoid them passing on the deadly virus to their babies, officials said.

Health Minister Abdou Fall announced the decision Friday, which was World AIDS Day.

"Access to anti-retroviral medicines will be extended to several hospitals in the country for the benefit of HIV-positive mothers and pregnant women," he said.

Some 90,000 people are HIV-positive in the west African country.
