AIDS-SAfrica-Mandela: Mandela describes AIDS as worse than war

Agence France-Presse - December 1, 2000 click here for francais language version

JOHANNESBURG, Dec 1 (AFP) - Former South African President Nelson Mandela described the AIDS pandemic as worse than war Friday in a World AIDS Day message broadcast on South African state television.

"HIV/AIDS is worse than a war," he said. "As we speak now, there are thousands of people dying from it.

"But this war can be won. This is one war where you can make a difference."

South Africa has the highest number of HIV victims in the world, with some 4.2 million people -- a 10th of the population -- infected, according to figures released this week.
